    The movie itself is engrossing in its depiction of military and civil tensions between the North and South, partially at the controversial demilitarized zone separating the two countries. Furthermore, I respect the filmmakers for not only avoiding the easy ridiculing that could’ve been done towards the North, but also humanizing them by adding several scenes showing that in the end, politics aside, we’re all apart of the same species.

    In regards to the actual blu-ray, the transfer for this film was beautifully done. Furthermore, the essay inside provides an informative and thought-provoking analysis of the film’s handling of certain controversial subject matters. Overall a great package from Arrow Video and one that I’ll be recommending to anyone interested in boutique physical media

    No doubt this is a very significant work for Koreans. After the still unresolved civil war, it was apparently the first to display North and South Koreans as members of a single nation.

    Sadly, however, the following factors combine to make it anything but a great movie:

    • a completely implausible whodunit plot, with an ending no doubt tailored to abide by censors’ views;
    • multiple flashbacks that are dreadfully confusing since some reflect hypotheses that turn out to be unfounded;
    • poor acting for many secondary characters;
    • uninspired photography;
    • a small budget with few locations and sets, none of which stands out as spectacular, and basically no special effects.

    Bonuses with the DVD are varied, and some contribute to contextualize the film both in the country’s history and cinematography. Most however are little more than promotional. Strangest of all, they include a 35-minute monologue by a British expert on Korean movies who initially appears knowledgeable enough but ends up admitting that he does not understand a word of the language. How about a Korean expert on Shakespeare who would not grasp any English?
