5,0 sur 5 étoiles a rare subject on film
Avis laissé au Royaume-Uni le 25 juin 2019
The subject of middle aged people looking after an elderly parent is not well represented on film, and is not as entertaining as some, but Andre Techine goes for a characteristically in-depth take which resonates after you've seen it, even if at the time it seems to lack moments of lightness. The mother, played by the excellent Marthe Villalonga, is certainly not a matriarch to bring much light into proceedings. But she is an improvement on the silent mother in J'embrasse pas, if essentially cut from the same cloth. They really are dreary, these kinds of figures, but alas all too common, clinging on to their dignity but having no real interest in other people and no passion for anything. Nothing ages one as much ... anyway the cruelty of her comments is very well caught, right from an opening scene where talking to her daughter Emilie (Deneuve) by a swimming pool at night, she comes out with a series of vaguely critical remarks that are felt in a negative way if barely causing a ripple. This is so much more subtle than Michael Haneke's approach in The Piano Teacher. Later Emilie does have an 'Erika' moment where she seems to be the subject of a sexual advance from a young doctor (the very prepossessing Bruno Todeschini) in a hospital, and is then practically making out with him on a riverside bench in full public view - not that this scene quite compares with the toilet scene in Haneke's film which is one of the best and funniest scenes about sex ever filmed ... Anyway the centre of Techine's film is not around this, which would be more characteristic of him. Instead it is about Emilie and her brother Antoine, their relationship, and how they cope with the mother's declining health. Much of the film is about the adult siblings, in fact, and it is a very subtle portrait indeed, verging on the incestuous, perhaps, in feeling, but far enough from this in reality for it not to be shocking in any way. It is like blue water into which you put a drop of red - it barely registers, yet it's there. In fact it leads her to lie to her husband, implicitly, in a marriage which is already on the rocks. The film opens with a family Christmas, more or less, with all the tensions barely held in place, until the mother's will is raised, and they are unleashed ... Emilie's children and the girlfriend of the hunky son feature as a welcome counterpoint, also full of insecurities but at least having the freshness of youth on their side. Deneuve is ultimately very touching in this portrait of bourgeois lives and their quiet suffering; her rapport with Auteuil is outstanding, and he reprises something of his awkwardness in Un Coeur en hiver made in the previous year - in fact Antoine could almost be Stephane from that film. It is a deeply resonant work with more light in it than it seems, and the landscape near Toulouse is magically caught - there's always that to go into, out of the frustrations that seem to be built in.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Magnificent film, poor mastering
Avis laissé aux États-Unis le 21 janvier 2017
This is one of my favorite French films but I hope a new mastering is on the way. Peering at André Techiné's widescreen compositions through a tiny, mid-screen "window box" taxes one's patience. Great movie, if you can put up with the mini-picture, though.
