    If you like history, this is the perfect book to read. The movie with Marlon Brando as Napoleon is excellent too.

    „Desirée“ ist ein Historiendrama und romantische, bewegende Liebesgeschichte aus dem Jahr 1954 von Henry Koster mit Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons und Merle Oberon.

    1794 verliebt sich der junge, aufstrebende General Napoleon Bonaparte (Marlon Brando) in Desirée Clary (Jean Simmons), die 17jährige Tochter eines Marseiller Seidenhändlers. Doch nach seinem bedeutenden Italienfeldzug scheint er sie vergessen zu haben. Als Napoleon die Adlige Josephine (Merle Oberon) heiratet, geht Desirée eine unglückliche Ehe mit dem Grafen Bernadotte ein - einem der größten Widersacher Napoelons...

    „Desirée“ ist ein historisches Biopic, das sehr dicht an der Wirklichkeit des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts entlangfährt. Zwei Leinwandikonen spielen die Hauptrollen und liefern sich eine der schönsten, unerfüllten Liebesgeschichte, in der ein Spannungsverhältnis aufgebaut wird, das bis zum Ende des Films trägt. Das Finale zeigt, wie die Personen menschlich gewachsen sind.

    Jean Simmons spielt die Titelfigur. Sie ist sowohl als das junge Mädchen, in das sich Napoleon verliebt, als auch die Grand Dame am kaiserlichen Hof in Paris bzw. Stockholm überzeugend. Am Ende erfüllt sie sogar als Diplomatin ihre Pflicht für La France. Marlon Brando gibt einen Welteroberer, der weiß, was er will. Darum heiratet er Josephine (Merle Oberon) eine Kokotte mit Beziehungen und trennt sich wieder von ihr, weil sie ihm keinen Thronfolger schenken kann.

    Eine pompöse Ausstattung, die sich an Gemälden der Zeit orientiert – z.B. die Kaiserkrönung und opulente Kostüme lassen das Empire wiederauferstehen. Die Historie bleibt meist etwas im Hintergrund unterstützt aber die Handlung im positiven Sinne. Worte wie Waterloo, Elba oder St Helena rauschen durch die Gespräche und bereiten das grandiose Finale vor.

    Désirée überredet den geschlagenen Napoleon aufzugeben. „Frankreich verlangt das jetzt von dir, damit das Sterben endlich ein Ende hat „. Auch Napoleons Traum von einem vereinten Europa unter seiner Führung ist geplatzt. Désirée antwortet, dass der Traum nicht verkehrt war. Frevelhaft war nur, wie er ihn zu verwirklichen versuchte.
    „Wann hast du aufgehört mich zu lieben?‘ will er noch wissen, bevor sie sich trennen. Antwort „Irgendwann einmal‘.

    Doch ich glaube, dass große Gefühle nie ganz vergehen, irgend etwas bleibt immer zurück. Im Film sah ich, wie Désirée erwachsen wurde und ihre Zuneigung zu Napoleon sich mit ihrer Entwicklung veränderte. Sie sah all seine Fehler, wie er für den eigenen Vorteil Menschen fallen ließ. Besonders das nächtliche Gespräch zwischen Désirée und Josephine erschien mir da sehr gewichtig. Sie sah, wie Napoleon erneut einen Menschen, der ihn liebte, von sich stieß. Genau wie damals sie selbst. Auch wenn noch Gefühle für diesen Menschen vorhanden sind, die große Liebe ist es nicht mehr.

    Insgesamt ein spektakuläres, sehr romantisches Historiendrama und wundervolle, sehr leidenschaftliche Romanze vor historischen Kriegsschauplatz, mit einer betörenden Jean Simmons, einem ausdrucksstarken Marlon Brando und unvergesslichen Film-Momenten.

    Wirklich sehr sehenswert.

    After discovering Twilight Time's superior Blu-Ray transfer of the usually grainy, greenish old De Luxe color Pan & Scan print of "The Egyptian," I was hooked. So far, the quality of the DVD's from this company is right up there with the Criterion Collection. I am not going to go into the historical facts of "Desiree." Hollywood always re-writes History, and in this case, the distortions are not that outrageous, except to College History professors who are expected to be picky. Yes, there is a problem with this epic: Desiree's story is not as interesting as Napoleon's, so all the major historical events take place off camera, as is also the case with David Lean's mammonth, 'Doctor Zhivago'. But what with "Desiree's cast headed by Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons, the gorgeous photography and sets, plus the sweeping musical score by Alex North, who's gonna complain except chronic bellyachers? The production, as sumptuous as any 20th Century-Fox CinemaScope epic of the era, plays better for me now than when I first saw it in the 50's at age 9. Back then, though impressed with the widescreen visuals and the four-track Stereophonic sound that followed the characters from one side in the long screen to the other, I thought the "romantic" goings on a bit of a drag. I wanted more spectacle - more "action". Now, however, I enjoyed the story immensely, perhaps because we'll never see the likes of this kind of historical drama again on the big screen, at least not in my lifetime, now that the CGI guys raised on computer games have taken over where human beings once used to tread. If you enjoy old fashioned, lavish entertainment, don't hesitate to acquire this Blu-Ray release. Hopefully, there'll be more 50's Fox CinemaScope releases on Blu-Ray from this company. I would look forward to their issuing such films as "Boy On A Dolphin," " Night People", "A Certain Smile", and "Untamed", to name a few; films as yet unavailable on DVD even in the pan and scan format.
