    wie der autobiographische erste Kinofilm ("Sie küssten und sie schlugen ihn") von Truffaut. Claude Miller hat einen Truffaut-Film gedreh (das Drehbuch stammte von Truffaut)t, der viel zu lang geraten ist, vielleicht als Hommage an Truffaut. Eine Psychotherapie, Vergangenheitsbewältigung, allerdings mit einer Menge guter Filmideen von Claude Miller. Alle Filme von Claude Miller ("Das Auge" usw.) besitzen hohe Qualität und es lohnt sich sehr, sie anzuschauen. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass die Hauptdarstellerin nach Drehende erst einmal ein halbes Jahr eine Auszeit genommen hat.

    A coming of age film about a 16 years old girl that lived in a post (WW2) French rural town.The girl played by "CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG" was not happy with her drab life and tried to escape from it.Unfortunately that meant reverting to pinching items that she desired.Especially when she sees shops selling nylon Sockings,Silk underware she desired these items at any cost.This meant that she had to steal these items and take them home but got caught by the shop owner..She then sees a way of obtaining money by breaking into the local church and taking the collection money but again gets caught..She then meets a music teacher and has a sexual fling with him but this quickly ends.She then tries to live a normal life by working to earn money but cannot hold jobs down.On returning to her place of employment to pick up her personal items after losing her typist job,she meets a young burglar who had broke into the office.He has a fling with her giving her lots of dodgy adventures but they get stopped by the local police.She gets sent has punishment to a convent but gets into further trouble,when fighting and then finally running away with another inmate.

    A pity it is in French with no English subtitles. ( caveat emptor) my French is a bit rusty ( O level grade 5 in 1965)
    I had seen it before so I knew the basic outlines of the plot.

    I have always loved this film, which is no longer available in the U.S. Note that this is a PAL, Region 2 disk (won't play on American dvd players unless you have an international chip in it. Note also that it is ONLY IN FRENCH. The subtitles are merely French language as well, for people who have hearing impairment, so you must know French to understand it.

    This was originally meant to be part of, or a companion piece to, Francois Truffaut's brilliant debut feature, THE 400 BLOWS, and the main character, Justine Casting, was meant to be friends with the main character from that film (and several other Truffaut films), Antoine Doinel. Instead, years later, Truffaut finished a script, but died tragically before he could film it. He gave the script to his friend and fellow director, Claude Berri, and Berri gave it to Claude Miller, who was the perfect person to direct it. As good as the script is (and it has Truffaut's stamp on it every step of the way), Claude Miller made the film "his," and really, the film belongs to its star, the astounding Charlotte Gainsbourg, who, even at 15 is every bit as outstanding as Jean-Pierre Leaud was as the young Antoine. I don't need to mention that Gainsbourg has continued to leave audiences awestruck in her work in a wide variety of films, most recently, those of Lars von Trier. I have never seen her give a performance that didn't create a character who stayed with me LONG after the film was over.
