    Un bon film d'espionnage qui n'a rien à voir avec les James Bond.
    Les acteurs sont bons et crédibles.
    Le scénario lui est particulièrement tarabiscoté et peu crédible à certains moments.
    Le film se laisse regarder avec plaisir sans plus.
    La qualité du blu ray est correcte pour un film de cette époque

    Nachdem er 1965 seine monumentale und auch monströse Bibelverfilmung ins Kino gebracht hatte, inszenierte John Huston in der zweiten Hälfte der 1960er Jahre eine Reihe von Filmen, die im Rückblick bemerkenswert pessimistisch erscheinen. Das gilt für »Reflections in the Golden Eye« (1967), für »Sinful Davey« (1968) sowie für »A Walk with Love and Death« (1969), und es gilt ganz besonders für »The Kremlin Letter« (»Der Brief an den Kreml«; 1969), der selten irgendwo zu sehen war/ist und hier endlich in einer sehr guten Bild- und Tonqualität auf DVD vorliegt.

    Die 1960er Jahre waren ein Jahrzehnt des Agentenfilms. Teils hatte der Boom dieses Genres sicherlich kommerzielle Gründe, teils aber spiegelten sich im Agentenfilm eine Reihe von spezifischen Themen der Zeit, – angefangen vom nostalgischen Blick auf die in Wahrheit verblichene Größe des britischen Empire (James Bond) bis hin zur allgemeineren Thematisierung des Verhältnisses von Politik und Moral (bspw. in »Der Spion, der aus der Kälte kam«). »The Kremlin Letter« knüpft an Letzteres an. Der desillusionierte Blick auf die Mechanismen der internationalen Spionage enthüllt zum einen, dass die ideologischen Gegensätze der politischen Blöcke auf (fast) nichts zusammenschrumpfen, wenn der Zweck erst einmal anfängt, sämtliche Mittel zu heiligen. Zum anderen wird aber auch kenntlich, wie die Tätigkeit der Agenten in diesem Umfeld nach und nach deren moralische Substanz angreift und zerstört

    John Huston treibt diese Gedankenspiele auf die Spitze. Die einfachen Agenten sind nur noch Spielfiguren, die hin und her geschoben und bei jeder Gelegenheit bedenkenlos geopfert werden. Menschliche Beziehungen sind höchstens in rudimentärer Form möglich. Und schließlich ist, wie sich herausstellt, sogar das übergeordnete Ziel längst abhanden gekommen. Primitive private Motive steuern die Ereignisse.

    Die Geschichte, die Huston erzählt, ist kompliziert, aber spannend. Der Zuschauer muss am Ball bleiben. Huston hält den Betrachter auf Distanz zu den Figuren. Totale und Halbtotale zeigen Figurenkonstellationen und deren interne Verhältnisse, Nahaufnahmen sind sehr sparsam eingesetzt. Eine Nähe zu den Figuren kommt nicht auf. Das Darstellerensemble ist vorzüglich. Hervorzuheben ist George Sanders in seinem letzten Film.

    Die DVD enthält keine Extras, aber englische Untertitel für Hörgeschädigte.

    Fazit: Ein kalter Film, vergleichbar mit Jean-Pierre Melvilles Filmen jener Zeit, allerdings ist bei Huston, anders als bei Melville, eine gewisse Tendenz zum Zynismus spürbar. Kein Film zum Gernhaben, aber sehenswert.

    Based on and true to the best seller of that time of the same name, with a first rate international cast, and written and directed by the great John Huston one wonders why this movie failed at the box office. The only reason I can think of is that it is such a cold-blooded, pitiless and remorseless look at espionage during the Cold War that it's callous and despairing view of the whole enterprise put off many. And it is complicated, and you do have to pay attention from the first frame onward or it is easy to become lost in the labrynthine plot and double and triple crosses. There are several stories playing out within the same plot and they all culminate in one of the cruelest, most chilling finales I've ever seen in film.

    As explained early on, espionage prior to World War II was played by often unaffiliated professional spies. A ring of these old spies are tasked to find the Letter of the title. With code names like The Highwayman, The Whore, The Erector Set, The Warlock, Sweet Alice, etc., these old semi-retired pros who operated together during the War are brought together, along with two young recruits, and sent to Moscow. Once in Moscow they set about infiltrating themselves by exploiting every human weakness, be it sex or drugs or whatever, in an effort to regain the letter and get out before they are discovered by Col. Kosnov, the vicious KGB counter-intelligence chief. In the process, everyone gets played and betrayed. To say more would give too much away.

    The tone of the film is expressed early on by John Huston himself as a US Navy Admiral, cutting Patrick O'Neal loose from the Navy to be seconded to an intelligence service, and making no bones about his disgust with the growing intelligence establishment. World War II changed intelligence from the Great Game of Kipling to the ruthless and pragmatic duels of the CIA and KGB bureaucracies. As is made plain in the film, these spies all worked and knew each other (Soviet, English and American), during the war and then turned on one another after the war.

    This is the Cold War. Much forgotten now, except by those who lived through it. This film was made at the height of that Cold War and reflects exactly the amorality of it all. There are no heroes here, only innocents and exploiters. Each side did whatever was needed and all one has to think of is the absolute scumbags we supported simply because they were anti-communist. We were in a titanic struggle with The Soviets on a world stage, and anyone and anything was fair game. And cruel practicality and efficiency were the norm. The Kremlin Letter was an expression of that heartless universe and a reminder of the cost of it.

    The whole cast is great, with Richard Boone and Max Von Sydow outstanding as old allies/adversaries. Patrick O'Neal and Barbara Parkins as the neophyte spies are good, and supporting roles are filled by George Sanders, Orson Welles, Dean Jagger, Bibi Andersson and the like.

    It will be hard to find, as this DVD, which I bought, was a limited issue with no frills. Hope it turns up on some movie channels, because it is well worth a look.

    No film is ever as good as the book which inspires it, but, within the limitations of time for the cinema, John Huston's 1969 effort comes very close.You might see a few adverse comments about wrinkles in the plot, or the casting; ignore them. The casting is exceptional, and the plot is well thought-out, and coherent. Large sections of the script are taken word-for-word from Noel Behn's book (the recognition code is actually quite easy to follow!). If you like a film that doesn't insult your intelligence, and is several cuts above the drivel turned out by Hollywood today, give this a viewing.

    This little-known John Huston film was described by its director as "a little over-complicated", which new viewers may feel is nothing but the truth. It's also savage and at times deeply unpleasant - this is a spy film based firmly on the notion that spies are despicable people. Huston significantly gives himself the brief role of the old admiral who, at the start of the film, dismisses the Patrick O'Neal character (the nearest thing the film has to a hero) from the Navy because of his espionage work for "one of those bastard organizations" and adds that he wishes these spy groups had never been formed. The spies are ruthless, greedy, infinitely manipulative - this is the ultimate antidote to the James Bond films and their imitators. It's not surprising that it was a big flop in 1970, but it's one of that year's best films, in its cold way - riveting, ingenious, and with a terrific cast. What it isn't, in this DVD version, is complete; Richard Boone asks O'Neal at one point to get two tickets for the Bolshoi, and late in the film they attend a performance of the company. The original version gave us a brief scene of them watching the dancers, just before O'Neal is captured by Max Von Sydow. This sequence lasts no more than half a minute, but it's not in this version - we are denied Boone's surprisingly enthusiastic response to the ballet ("Nephew, if you live to be a hundred, you may never see anything like that again!"), with its deft hint that that he really isn't the man he's seemed to be. Why has it gone? When the film was shown on British television last (about twenty years ago), it was still there.
